The New Downhill Legend!
The project was put in the garage for the winter due to household maintenance. This post came sooner than I had hoped, but it has restarted the project build with a new speed. Over the past few months I was thinking of how best to go about the project as it would heavily rely on community support for photos, information, diagrams etc… which is all there and people are happy to help at there own time (which is understandable).
It was possible to get the majority of parts sourced and stored. In the back of my mind was always the problem of the extra holes which have been drilled in the base & lid and how to over come this for shot-blasting and powder coating and also if the lid was the correct size due to it being a Daytona cabinet. Even though a friend had confirmed the sizes, the fact someone had questioned it was always a worry.
In January decided to start looking again for spare parts for the cabinet and found a sales post on a arcade forum. The guy was selling a twin Initial D 2 cabinet (originally imported by JNC from Dubai), which was priced very reasonable. However a few posts down it had been talked about being split and people enquiry about each half, I did some maths and could get the money for the single (possible the twin if push came) so sent over a message.
Following conversations and it looked like I had secured the slave unit from the twin with topper. In the meantime I tracked down the purchaser of the other half as knowing where other Initial D cabinets are located is helpful for questions to owners and if it is put up for sale it would be nice to join them back together. Being the slave unit there are a few components missing and obviously there will be some parts which needs replacing, but in principle I now how a working Initial D 2 cabinet.
So what about the original project? We’ll nothing has changed, purchasing the new cabinet means that I have my own cabinet to use for reference. This will stop me pestering the people on the forums as much for photos and information, allow me to check that issue with the lid and also with part numbers which need to be replaced or located. Also it will mean I will end up with two Initial D cabinets fully restored and both in new condition (hopefully). My hardest decision now is what version of Initial D do I sticker them up to?
