Game Play

Modes – The game features a Story mode, which see’s you battle against other racers on 4 different tracks. The Time Trial allows you to race each course alone to set the fastest time, each track has a ranking board and your records are saved to the cartridge, all track rankings are listed as 1st 2:00, 2nd 2:10, 3rd 2:20, 4th 2:30, 5th 2:40. Time Trial also allows you to save one GHOST of your best time to compete against, due to limited storage space this is set to only one ghost for all tracks, to see which track has the saved ghost file it is marked with a G. Multiplayer allows you to connect two Game Boys and play head-to-head against a friend, share any saved Ghost data and also trade your fastest times.

Car Selection – The game gives you a list of cars to choose from, all rated on Handling and Gear, once selected you can then choose to drive Automatic Transmission (AT) or Manual Transmission (MT). At the start of the game you have 11 different cars to choose from in story mode. Time Trial only allows you to select Itsuki’s AE85 or Takumi AE86, however as you beat racers in the story mode you then can unlock more cars as well as  7 special cars (Natsuki’s Hatchback, Robot, Sports Car, Kei Truck, Jeep, Bike & Formula 1) taking the total count to 18 playable cars.

Tracks – The game starts with 4 tracks available on Time Trial mode Akina, Night Kids (Myogi), Red Suns (Akagi), and Mako Sayuki (Usui Passs). These tracks feature in the story mode, however 2 extra tracks become available later on in the game to race in time trial Hakone and Darumi (track exclusive to this game).

Missing Fighter Plane
Looking in the HEX code of the game (HEX ID: 0C), Car 2 which is now a flying robot seems to have originally planned to be a fighter jet. We have found no reason why this was excluded from the game or that it is available to unlock through a code or accomplishment.
